3/4/08 - The Guys - Disappointing

gang. Well as you can tell by my title I was not impressed at all with tonight's performances. Not only did the guys choose lousy songs to sing from a decade that was rich with great music but none of them did what I call an outstanding performance. And what the heck was wrong with Paula being such a Chatty Cathy tonight?

I am getting ahead of myself tonight. Ryan gives us his usual welcome and also the intros to the judges. The way he is talking I am waiting with sheer anticipation for the singing to begin not knowing this would be a real dudville night ahead of me. So let's get on with the downside of the 80's.


:laugh: Luke Menard is up first and chooses to sing "Wake Me Up" by Wham. He does it becauses he thinks it is a fun song however I doubt anyone was laughing with him more at him. Before the judges even give their critiques I had written down rough start, pitchy and sounds too girlish. Lo and behold both Randy and Simon mention these items. Of course chatty Paula liked it. Sorry Luke, but that was a bust. My grade: C-


My top banana for the evening is next in the form of David Archuleta. His song choice is "Another Day In Paradise" by Phil Collins. Bravo to this kid for playing the piano however I think it threw his pitch off a little. He does well overall and Randy and Paula basically like him. However, Simon mentions he needs to lighten up some as he is picking kind of gloomy songs. My grade: B+


If I did not know that Danny Noreiga was a guy I would think he was a girl. Coming out dressed fairly feminine with purple streaks in his hair he attempts to sing "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell. What a horrible mess this was from the singing to the stage presence which was kind of gross in a way with suggestive movements. Randy mentions the pitch problems, Paula thinks he is spicy and true to himself but Simon totally hated it. Simon does have a cute comment about Paula's statement involving the spicy which he says is just like a chicken wing. I had to laugh at that one. Overall, Danny is my first pick to go home. My grade: D


:surprised: Next up is my favorite who let me down tonight with his choice of song. David Hernandez is singing "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" originally by Meatloaf although many associate it with Celine Dion. He starts out okay but the pitch problems are there and the song seemed to be all over the place like he was trying to find which key to sing it in. Randy mentions the pitch problems but thought the song was a good choice. Paula liked him and Simon thought it was okay but not as good as last week. My grade: B-


:tsk: What is going on with these guys I ask. Michael Johns is singing "Don't Forget About Me" by Simple Minds. He starts out good in his lower register but then starts singing in too high of a note and towards the end sounds like he is shouting the lyrics. I will say he seems really into the song but it was just not overall very good in my opinion. However the judges liked it although Simon mentions that he has not connected with any song yet. My grade: C


: Finally a fairly decent performance except for one thing in my opinion. David Cook is singing Lionel Ritchie's "Hello". The vocal is very good but he is playing the electric guitar which I think threw the song off. However the judges are totally impressed and think it could be a hit. I wouldn't buy it. My grade: B+


Jason Castro chooses a song that could not even compare to the some of the great 80's music out there. It is called "Hallelujah" originally by Leonard Cohen although Jeff Buckley did a cover of it. This time he has no guitar and sits on a stool. It is a pleasant rendition but overall not right for this night I think. I noticed the pitch problems especially at the end but the judges think he did great with Simon actually saying he loved it. I definitely need a stiff drink at this point I think. My grade: B-


Our last guy Chikezie Eze is singing a song that Whitney Houston did however right away I could tell it was the Luther Van Dross version he sang of "All The Woman I Need" or if you prefer "He/She Fills Me Up". I thought it was pretty good vocally and he does show personality. Randy likes it. Of course our "happy" Paula likes it but Simon calls it caberet and says it didn't work. Remember that drink I ordered? Make it 2 please. I just am not on the same wavelength with some of these comments from the judges at all. My grade: B


Okay, I really did not like tonight, can you tell? A couple of the guys did okay but I think for sure David Archuleta is a shoe-in for the top 6. As for the rest of the guys, jeesh it is anyone's guess although I think Michael Johns has enough fans to pull him through.

My picks to go are Danny Noreiga and Luke Menard although Michael Johns is also in my bottom 3 but he is probably safe. I am worried about my favorite David Hernandez because of the rumors I am hearing and the fact I voted 150 times and got through everytime so he also may be in danger. I hope not but who knows for sure.

Well, that's a wrap for tonight and I'll be back tomorrow with the girls re-cap hoping they choose much better songs. Bye for now!

good morning concertcris, I thought the guys did ok last night with what they had to work with.,. I personally liked David H the best but than he is my favorite and think this kid has an amazing voice. But his chances of staying are getting pretty slim with all the news about him stripping in a gay bar, I am so sad too because I think he is the one that could give David A a run for it. Anyway we'll see soon enough.

I agree with you on the rest except for David A. As you know of coures as everyone knows this kid can sing but really listen to him closely there is no JOY in anything he sings. IT's just flat, he sings the words and has the range but it's like there is no feelings not thought to it. But that is my opinion and of course I'm pretty much in a class by myself on that one ha..

I so agree that Micheal Johns the heavey hitter did HORRABLE as did the other heavy hitter Jason C. I didn't care for either of them and think that Micheal is running on rep alone now. You hit the nail on the head with Danny, I don't think anyone would be surprised if he'd come out in a dress ha. Jokes aside I do like his attitude toward Simon, but that attitude could cost him too.

David C did pretty good but I really wish these guys would lose the instruments DOn't like them and don't think it's fair to the ones that don't play an instrument

I so hope that the two that go are Danny and Luke because I am so afraid for David H. I am so ashambed that people would hold his lifestyle against him. It's not fair because this kid can sing.

Hi Sandi. David H is my favorite also and yeppers I am not happy about the recent news regarding him either. It makes my blood boil that once again the press may ruin another person's chances of gaining success. I was not so impressed with his song tonight but do realize he is a wonderful singer and I definitely wanted him in that top 10 which is why I only voted for him. Keeping my fingers crossed for sure.

As for David Archuleta, I think this kid can sing but have to agree with Simon that he is picking kind of gloomy songs that really do not have any joy in them. He is only 17 and really should be picking songs that are fun and emphasizing how young he is. I agree the joy is not there.

Most of the other guys were just okay for me but in reality I was totally disappointed with the song choices as you can tell by my re-cap. Well, I will be on pins and needles until we find out whether our David is safe or not so chat with you soon and thanks for posting.

I was on the AI boards last night for hours.. David H is really getting raked over the coals over there. Or was anyway. I haven't checked in there today yet but some of these people are so what to call them silly, They do not want their kids to look up to someone who is a male stripper, think he should never have been allowed to stay in the show, etc etc, They brought up Frenchie from whatever season she was in and others tried to tell them that Frenchie had nude pictures on a kiddy porn site and hid the fact, where David had told the show what he did for a living and the two were very different. I kid you not CC all day they kept it up. I defended him the best I could, even went so far as to say that to look at it in a different light, IF he stays with AI, and gets a contract to do a album he won't have to go back to that way of live. Not that it did much good mind you. Some people.
I finally shut my computer down about 1 am. and the West Coast was still voting or just finished, most that replied from that regien were voting for David H. But they say there is a site out there that can tell who's ahead and who's in danger by the phone calls and they had Luke and David H the lowest points with Micheal Johns 3rd lowest, they also say that this site has been right on for the last 2 weeks. I'm so afraid for David right now, and only hope the West coasters pulled it off.. You should just peak into GD on American Idol it's horrid really bad, or like I said it was yesterday anyway. I also heard that Entertainment has an interview with David tonight at 6:30 so I'll have to watch that.

Regarding David H and his stripping past, I say who the hell cares. Lot of people strip to put themselves through school or to make some extra money. I'm really praying it doesn't hurt him in this competition. It would be sad to see someone with such talent who has shown improvement leave before making it to the Top 12.

:D Hi Angie. Guess we are on different pages. It is not that I thought the guys with the exception of a couple were totally bad but with all the great music out there for that decade I was definitely disappointed with the songs.

Anyway, thanks for posting and I will be going over to read your review.

I know there are much better songs they could have chosen, but if the rumors of only a list of 50 songs is correct that they get to pick from, then that really sucks...for lack of a better word.

Is this the first season they've done this or has this been done in the past and we never heard about it? It just really limits them on what songs they can choose.

I was surprised we disagreed as I usually agree with everything or most everything you say :)

I'm just hoping the girls can bring it as they all need to prove themselves worthy and are going to need to fight to get that spot except for a few of them.

To answer your question Angie. Actually in the past the contestants have been able to choose whatever song they wanted before the top 12 are announced. As for the top 12 themselves I think the list is probably bigger as in the past some have gotten special clearance for certain songs. Also keep in mind with all the guest mentors, many of them have had a big catalogue of songs to choose from.

So yep I think the song selection is very limited this season and I am wondering if this is going to be mostly the case as the show progresses. I know we Beatles week coming up and they have tons of songs but after that, it's anyone's guess how it will go.

I was very happy with David A and David H's performance. David C's was Ok. Other than that the guys were very dull last night. Hope the girls to better tonight.

Thanks Angie for that site, yep that's the one that I was trying to find and of course it's kind of hard to find if you don't know the name of it ha.. Anyway it does me no good anyway, because if you look at it one way,
David H got more votes than David A called "Raw Votes"
But if you look at another graft than they have David H in 7th Place and going home. I'd love to do that speed dialing thing but of course not sure how that works or what it cost ha.. But thanks so much for the help

Rumor has it that David A will "take home the win" after all is said and done. He's good, I'll give him that but I'm still hanging on to David H. This guy has got my attention for whatever reason.

I watched the girls tonight and I wasn't any more impressed with them than last week. ~Yawn~ However, I still voted for my favorite, Asia'h Epperson. I liked Amanda Overmyer's performance tonight. I agree with Randy about keeping her "bluesy" sound. It sounds good for her. The only other singer that sounded half way decent tonight was Syesha Macardo. She had great range in her song.

I agree denib. I Love Asia'h as well and I thought she did pretty good, she has so much pep and it shows in her voice and in her performance. The top runners, namly Carly and Kristi Lee did do that great as far as I'm concerned anyway.
Guess tomorrow night will tell the tale though,

I know (biting nails). I see Brooke White and Kady Malloy leaving but I've thought that before and they are still here. hmmm!

Didn't watch, and now sounds like the recap was the way to go after all, huh?
