It took seven seasons, but contestants on American Idol are finally being allowed to tackle the Lennon-McCartney catalog. Let's give a hand to the shadowy, Michael-Jackson-affiliated legal entity that currently owns those publishing rights. And let's, er, look forward to all the caterwauled Beatles covers this season (?) I dunno — I enjoy Idol plenty, and I'm all for artists putting their own spins on the Fab Four's music, but somehow I just can't get too excited about this. Much as I'd like to believe otherwise, there's just no way this will lead to anything but painfully slick garbage assaulting my ears. Or is there?

woo hoo While I was a huge beatlemanic in my teens I somehow doubt that any of these contestants will do that good with the Beatles music. They were so distinctive in their day. I can only think of a few songs that might be done fairly well by some of the guys but the girls I am just not picturing that at all. Guess we will find out.

I'm not so excited about this. I'm afraid it's just going to be a big mess with lots of negative comments from the judges and be hard especially for the girls.

I agree with you Angie, I don't think the judges will let this bunch of kids get away with anything and of course as good as some of them are they'll never be able to match the real thing, and that will bring out the bad side of Simon for sure, I'd be afraid to do a Beatles song to tell the truth, some might do ok but I don't look for any of them to do great, but then I might be surprised. Hoping for the best of them.
